Given to fly

Recently quite a few of you had asked me why I haven't been doing any reviews,
the truth is I've been busy with alot of things lately and I've barely found time for myself let alone the blog.

Yeah thats a lie.

So anyway, heres one of a song that I've been listening to quite alot these days.

Pearl Jam - Given to fly

He could have tuned in, tuned in, but he tuned out.
A bad time nothing could save him.
Alone in a corridor, waiting, locked out.
He got up outta there ran for hundreds of miles.
He made it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree.
The wind rose up set him down on his knee.
A wave came crashing like a fist to the jaw.
Deliver him wings, "Hey look at me now!"
Arms wide open with the sea as his floor.
Oh, power, oh. He's flying whole. High, wide, oh.

He floated back down cause he wanted to share.
This key to the locks, on the chains, he saw everywhere.
But first he was stripped, and then he was stabbed by faceless men.
Well fuckers, he still stands.
And he still gets his love he just gives it away.
The love he receives is the love that is saved.
And sometimes is seen a strange spot in the sky.
A human being that was given to fly.
I'm flying, oh. High flying, oh.
He's flying, oh. High, oh, oh.

The song can be found on 'Yield'
I never did give that album much time , and I'm glad I did while passively listening to it while driving a few days ago, I never liked the music and rhythm in the song until I actually sat through it and found that the rhythm was so integral to the theme behind the track, sort of like 'Rearview Mirror' where the music and rhythm are very......'movey'.
Given to fly is a great example of how rhythm can contribute so much to a song's story and background.
The lyrics provide a pleasant read ,mostly because the theme is pretty straightforward ,
Eddie's classic yelp (if you will) can be heard whenever he says 'Fly!' and you could almost imagine him on a grassy meadow as a hundred American planes fly over Pearl Harbour.
*cough*
The song talks about a suppressed man whos been dancing to the tune of society's flute and basically, living the norm.

Suddenly, salvation.

He breaks free from the shackles and learns more about the meaning of life and how he was meant to live it before the 'system' landed.
He attempts to share this 'love' with the world soon after and the song draws to a close as melodic as how it first started.

Interesting thought - You might be able to liken the story of the song with Jesus on some levels, although my first thought was something along the lines of a visual story that showed a man in an office cubicle wearing a 'leash' (tie) and staring at a computer screen,he is then seen flying high over the ocean with a smile on his face, different panoramic shots are seen with conjunction to the rhythm of the song.
Few of us are that lucky to think outside the box and be able to think deep without being afraid of being labelled a wierd person with a dangerous mind.
If only the world were fortunate enough,

to be given to fly.

Until next time,
